Urban design is a complex process focusing on the relationship between the city's necessary physical arrangements and the psychological health of its inhabitants. Of course the physical space must encourage commerce, but integral to this is the creation of a physical environment, that can inspire (community spirit), by which benign development occurs.
Urban Design is alternatively defined according to many unique views of what a city in fact is. A widely accepted definition purports that "Urban design is a discipline primarily concerned with the layout of urban planning, urban landscape, urban functions, and is particularly concerned with urban public space." ?Urban design is more specific and data-oriented than the more abstract urban planning. However, since the mid-twentieth century practical differences have emerged between urban design, landscape design and architectural design.
